چکیده
Abstract. Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are major disruptions of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) polar vortex and occur on average approximately six times per decade in observation-based records. However, within these records, intervals significantly higher lower SSW rates observed, suggesting possibility low-frequency variations event occurrence. A better understanding factors that influence this decadal variability may help to improve predictability NH midlatitude surface climate, through stratosphere–troposphere coupling. In work, multi-decadal events is examined a 1000-year pre-industrial simulation coupled global climate model. Using wavelet spectral decomposition method, we show hiatus (intervals or more with no SSWs) consecutive (extended at least one each year) vary timescales periods between 60 90 years. Sudden Stratospheric Warmings as Noise-Induced Transitions
Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are usually considered to be initiated by planetary wave activity. Here it is asked whether small-scale variability (e.g., related to gravity waves) can lead to SSWs given a certain amount of planetary wave activity that is by itself not sufficient to cause a SSW. A highly vertically truncated version of the Holton–Mass model of stratospheric wave–mean flow ...

متن کاملZonal-Mean Dynamics of Extended Recoveries from Stratospheric Sudden Warmings
The recovery of theArctic polar vortex following stratospheric suddenwarmings is found to take upward of 3 months in a particular subset of cases, termed here polar-night jet oscillation (PJO) events. The anomalous zonal-mean circulation above the pole during this recovery is characterized by a persistently warm lower stratosphere, and above this a cold midstratosphere and anomalously high stra...
متن کاملThe Life Cycle of the Northern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warmings
Motivated by recent evidence of strong stratospheric–tropospheric coupling during the Northern Hemisphere winter, this study examines the evolution of the atmospheric flow and wave fluxes at levels throughout the stratosphere and troposphere during the composite life cycle of a sudden stratospheric warming. The composite comprises 39 major and minor warming events using 44 years of NCEP–NCAR re...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between ENSO, Stratospheric Sudden Warmings, and Blocking
This paper examines the influence of El Ni~ no–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on different aspects of major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), focusing on the precursor role of blocking events. The results reveal an ENSO modulation of the blocking precursors of SSWs. European and Atlantic blocks tend to precede SSWs during El Ni~ no (EN), whereas eastern Pacific and Siberian blocks are the pref...
